What is the procedure involving cosmetic bonding and composite dental veneers?

After a consultation to discuss your concerns about the cosmetic look of your existing teeth and deciding on a plan, the dentist will numb the area to be treated. The surface of teeth where the composite will be applied is thorough cleaned as the composite needs a clean surface to adhere to. The dentist will discuss a shade of composite with you. This is carefully matched to your existing surrounding natural teeth. Some patients prefer to whiten their teeth before choosing the shade of the composite. Composite material does not whiten so it is a good idea to whiten you teeth before the treatment and match the composite shade to the whiter smile. After the shade is chosen, a rubber dam is applied to keep the teeth dry, then the tooth is shaped by the dentist to prepare it for the composite veneer.
The dentist then apples a special etch to the surface of the teeth which creates a better surface for the composite to bond to. The composite is then applied to the etched tooth surface, to make any cosmetic problems. The composite is then exposed to a curing light to harden it. The composite is often applied to the tooth in several thin layers of 1 mm to perfect the shape, translucency and texture of the veneers. The dentist then polishes and buffs the composite veneers to bring out the smooth and translucent surface of your new composite veneers.

What are the advantages of composite veneers?

• Composite veneers require minimum removal of existing tooth at the preparation stage.
• They provide a quick, often one visit solution to mask crooked, worn, discoloured, stained, damaged teeth, chipped teeth.
• Composite veneers are a much cheaper option to porcelain veneers.

What are the disadvantages of composite veneers?

The main drawback of composite veneers as compared to porcelain veneers, is that composite material is not as strong as porcelain and therefore does not last as long. Composite also stains more than natural teeth. Porcelain veneers in comparison are stain resistant.

What is the cost of composite dental veneers?

Composite dental veneers cost £495 per veneer.

What is the cost of cosmetic bonding?
